Start making homemade baby food

Christine is a food blogger from France who cooks organic baby food and healthy food for children. We asked her to tell us about the best baby food, and got plenty of inspiration for how to make baby food – and tips for fussy eaters.

Help! My baby doesn’t like the baby food I cook.

The idea behind first tasting portions is to stimulate the child’s interest in new flavours. So I believe it’s important not to force babies to eat if they don’t like the taste. Your baby is still getting all their essential nutrients from milk.

The right consistency is also important.

On the other hand, it’s important to let babies taste the same dish several times in order to be sure that they don’t like it. The right consistency is also important. The baby may dislike it because it’s too thin, too thick, too grainy or too chunky.

My best advice for parents who want to make homemade baby food

  1. Explore flavours and consistencies gradually. Let your baby get to taste one fruit or vegetable at a time before mixing several together or using spices.
  2. Don’t rush and don’t force your baby to eat everything on the plate. If babies get their milk and have a satisfactory growth curve, sleep well and are developing normally, this means that they’re getting just what they need.
  3. Enjoy making your own baby food using the healthiest and best seasonal produce. And don’t hesitate to experiment with flavourful and exotic foods.

Is the children’s food you cook different?

I use lots of fruits and vegetables, even unusual vegetables and exotic fruits that my friends and relatives don’t give their kids.

I also like mixing sweet and salty. It’s something that I appreciate after living a few years in England. Over there the combination is more common than here in France.

And I’m not afraid to use spices – other people I know rarely give their children any. My children also get to taste a variety of cheeses, even the strong-flavoured ones!

Why did you start to make your own baby food?

When the time came to introduce tasting portions, it felt completely natural to make my own baby food. I’ve always cooked for myself and my husband, so it was obvious to me that I would make the food for our children.

What’s your children’s favourite food?

Risotto with green peas and goat cheese, or beetroot cupcakes that they got as soon as they could eat food with chunks in it. Those are dishes that both my kids devoured, from the first to the last bite.

I let my children discover tastes from around the world.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I read loads of cookbooks and food magazines and adapt the recipes for young children. I like to cook seasonally, and I often talk to vegetable farmers who advise me on the best seasonal products.

I’ve also been lucky enough to travel a lot and let my children discover spices and flavours from around the world.
