Åre residents Anna Kihlström and Jacob Lönnström share their tips for family activities in the mountains – in winter or summer.

Outdoor family activities require careful planning – here are some tips.

Winter season

Rödkullen. Child-friendly skiing in the Åre mountains for families. This is a wonderful place to spend a whole day, particularly in a group of several families. The grown-ups can take it in turns to ski or supervise the kids. There’s a barbecue pit and toboggan slope at the lower end of the Rödkullen car park. You can take the conveyor belt with the younger kids, toboggan or just barbecue hot dogs and chill out.

Vita Renen waffle café and mountain restaurant. Take a cross-country skiing trip to Vita Renen on Renfjället! Depart from Edsåsdalen; it’s about 4 kilometres from here. You ski and pull your child in a sledge. A young baby can also sit safely in a baby carrier inside Mum or Dad’s jacket or wear a down-filled overall and come along to enjoy the most beautiful mountain scenery in the world. There’s a fantastic panoramic view of Åre from here!

Fröå gruva. Situated between Huså and Åre Björnen. You can cross-country ski along an amazing four-kilometre-long track to the world’s cosiest cabin: it has delicious food and is extremely child friendly.

Plan your trip with a baby – checklist!

Summer season

Åre fjäll. An obvious choice! Park at Fjällgården, pack your baby into a baby carrier and head straight up the mountain. Just a 15-minute walk from there is the world’s most magnificent view. Or you can walk for another 30-40 minutes to Hummeln to see even more and even farther!

Ullådalen. An autumn favourite for its fantastic colours and views. Depart from Ullådalen and walk straight up towards the summit. We usually pick berries as we walk to enjoy before we walk back down.

Solstigen. This hiking trail winds from Björnen and around the whole of Åreskutan, and there are many good places you can join the trail, depending on how far you want to walk. We usually pick up the trail at Fjällgården or Tottbacken. Once you’re on the Solstigen trail, you can also choose which footpath you want to hike. There are amazing trails for both summer and autumn!

Family outing in the woods – food and inspiration

Tännforsen. Sweden’s largest waterfall is about a 20-minute car journey away from Åre. You can take a walk in the woods and admire the mighty waterfall. And then you can have refreshments, lunch or dinner at the restaurant.

Tegeforsen. Situated between Åre and Duved. We usually cycle here for a picnic in summer! There’s a wonderful forest track that take 20 minutes by bike. The same trip takes ten minutes by car.

Fröå gruva. See above. This is also a popular summer destination. You can come by car, bike (we hitch a bicycle trailer to our bikes that our daughter Edith loves) or you can walk here from Åre Björnen!
